"There's a particular quality of light in Colorado — the way it falls across open meadows at golden hour, or catches the snow on a distant peak — that I never tire of chasing."

Painting the West
from the Inside Out

Jim Wester has spent decades walking the trails, fields, and foothills of Colorado — canvas and palette in hand. His oil paintings capture not just the visual drama of the Rocky Mountain West, but the feeling of being present in these landscapes.

Working both plein air in the field and in his Longmont studio, Jim brings a painter's eye to every composition — attentive to light, season, and the quiet emotional truth of a place.

From Field to Studio

Find the Light

Jim walks the landscape first — looking for the composition, the quality of light, the emotional note he wants to strike before touching a brush.

2
🎨

Paint on Location

Plein air panels — usually 6×8 to 12×16 inches — are painted directly in the field, capturing light effects that can't be manufactured in a studio.

Develop in Studio

The best field studies become larger studio paintings — developed across multiple sessions, working from the panel and from memory rather than photographs.

Finished paintings are offered as originals or as museum-quality giclée prints — each one hand-signed and shipped with care to collectors across the country.

Jim Wester

Jim Wester is a Colorado-based oil painter whose work is rooted in a lifelong relationship with the landscapes of the American West. Growing up surrounded by the open skies and dramatic terrain of the Rocky Mountain region, Jim developed an early fascination with light—the way it shifts across a meadow, glances off a ridgeline, or settles into the long shadows of late afternoon.

His paintings are the product of both careful observation and deep intuition. Whether working en plein air in the field or refining compositions in his Longmont studio, Jim seeks to capture something true about a place—not just its appearance, but its feeling.

Jim's work has been collected throughout Colorado and across the country, and he regularly exhibits at galleries in the Boulder-Denver area. He is available for commissions and welcomes inquiries from collectors and institutions.

Plein Air & Studio Work

Jim works in both traditions—carrying his pochade box and paints into the field to capture fleeting light effects en plein air, then returning to his studio to develop larger, more resolved paintings from those direct observations.

The studio paintings benefit from the spontaneity and accuracy of the field studies, while the plein air works carry an energy and immediacy that comes from painting in real time, in real weather, under the actual sky.

This dialogue between field and studio is central to Jim's practice. Neither mode is subordinate to the other—they inform and energize each other in ways that keep his work fresh and grounded in direct experience.

Why Landscapes

For Jim, landscape painting is ultimately about relationship—the human relationship with the natural world and with specific places that hold meaning and memory. Colorado's landscapes offer an inexhaustible range of subjects: the flat agricultural plains east of the Rockies, the foothills and their ponderosa forests, the high alpine terrain above treeline.

Each season brings new light conditions, new color relationships, new emotional registers. There is always more to see, and always more to learn about how to see it. That combination of endless variety and familiar territory is what keeps Jim returning to these landscapes year after year.

His connection to Longmont and the surrounding region runs deep. These are not generic "western landscapes" but specific places, painted with specific knowledge and affection.
